What is a defamation cease and desist letter?
It is a written demand that someone stop making false statements about you, take them down where they can, and sometimes publish a retraction. You identify the statements, explain why they are false, describe the harm, and set a deadline.
Libel usually means written or published falsehoods. Slander usually means spoken ones. Either way, the letter creates notice and evidence before you escalate.
Quote their words when you can. Exact language is harder to deny than a paraphrase.
When to send one
- False reviews or posts claiming facts you can disprove
- Accusations that damaged your business, job, or reputation
- Statements republished on sites that will take content down on notice
If the post is already gone and there is no ongoing risk, you may not need a letter. If you want damages or a court order to stop repetition, talk to an attorney about filing suit.

Quote the false statements
Copy the exact words and note where they were published (platform, URL, date).
Explain why they are false and what they cost you
State the facts that make the claim untrue, and describe harm such as lost customers or reputational damage.
Demand a clear fix by a date
Ask them to stop, take the content down, publish a retraction if you want one, and confirm in writing. Ten to fourteen days is a common window. Send by certified mail and keep screenshots as Exhibit A.
