What is a harassment cease and desist letter?
It is a written demand that someone stop specific unwanted contact or conduct directed at you. You name the behaviors, say they are unwanted, describe the harm, and demand that they stop by a date you choose.
The letter matters because it ends any claim that they "did not know" the conduct bothered you. If you later seek a restraining order or sue, a dated letter plus proof they continued is strong evidence.
Be specific. Dates, times, and counts carry far more weight than "keeps harassing me."
When to send one
- Repeated calls, texts, emails, or messages after you asked them to stop
- Showing up at your home, work, or other places without invitation
- Following you, monitoring you, or contacting your friends and family about you
- Online harassment tied to you that you can document

Write it the way you would tell a police officer: what happened, when, and how often. Add more behaviors if there is more than one pattern.
Say how it has affected you
Pick the impacts that are true: stress, harm to your reputation or business, feeling threatened. Keep the tone factual.
Set a deadline and send it so it is traceable
Ten to fourteen days is common. Demand immediate action if the conduct is ongoing or dangerous. Send by certified mail with return receipt, and keep screenshots or call logs as Exhibit A if you have them.
